Altar Collage

In line with the February theme of renunciation, this month’s art project focuses on limitation. How can I express myself within set boundaries? The Altar Collage project uses collage art as a way of limiting the mind and creating a focus for prayer and devotion.

Long-term karma yogi Judith, an avid collage fan shares: “Making collages helps me open up to new possibilities. Rather than work with a preconceived notion of what my work should look like, I am bound by the images I find. There is a meditative quality to leafing through magazines, scissors in hand. What is my eye drawn to? Once I have gathered all attractive pieces, I put them on display. Now my mind starts connecting. Often the colors I look for aren’t quite there, or images have the wrong shape or size. By shifting, discarding, leafing through magazines again, and the occasional tearing and cutting of material, a picture emerges. Not a picture I could have ever imagined beforehand. But the picture that was waiting to arise.”
