Teaching on Ashram Time

Whereas all neighboring communities have changed their time to summer time, for some mysterious reason, the ashram has not. We are in a time zone all of our own and it shows. The question: "What day is it today anyway?" is regularly voiced, and the response is usually met with astonishment. "Really? Oh no, then I am on dishes tonight!"

Ashram Time especially plays its tricks on me during the 10 day Hatha Yoga teacher training. At first, time slows down: I do some Hatha, massage my feet in the sun and have plenty of time to finish a book report. Then all of a sudden, times catches up on me. With only  a couple of days left, I need to prepare teaching two Hatha classes, attend and evaluate 8 other ones, and write up all these assignments I have been postponing.

The night before the big deadline, I find myself in front of my laptop writing up my 6 lesson plan. Yawning, I curse the ashram time warp. Until I realise that I am the time warp myself. Transported back to 2001, I see myself sitting behind a computer at Sussex university, working 2 days & nights in a row, finishing my Masters's thesis. Fortunately, times have changed. This time, I finish my lesson plans at 11.30 pm. Still extraordinarily late for Ashram Time standards, but my body lets me get away with it.

So now I have finished my first part of teacher training. With my 6 lesson teaching plan having been approved, I can now plunge into the practical part of the training. Teaching morning class before breakfast, together with the other newbie teachers. My first lesson will be on Friday. But what day is it today anyway?
